It’s time to start thinking about Desert Valley Softball again

It’s time to start thinking about Desert Valley Softball again...Fernley’s Desert Valley Girls Softball Association (DVGSA) reflects on a great 2009 season and looks forward to the upcoming 2010 spring season.
The 2009 spring season was arguably one of the best overall seasons for the league. With approximately 330 local players ranging in age from 3 to 14 years old, and over 100 local volunteers, the league has continued to provide a good foundation that successful youth organizations need.
The community has continued to show great support of Desert Valley Girls Softball Association through its volunteer base, sponsorships, donations and overall cooperative efforts. Without the volunteers and sponsors, the league simply would not be what it is today.
Despite the struggling economy, the league looks to continually grow in numbers every year. DVGSA offers a great low cost youth softball program. Registration fees have not being raised since the beginning of 2007. The average cost of registration remains under $60, with a range of $45-$75.
League teams are organized by age, with five divisions including Mini T-ball (3-5 yrs, boys & girls), T-Ball (5-7yrs girls only), 10 & under, 12 & under and 14 & under. League age is equal to the players’ actual age on December 31st. Each division is progressive in structure and the development of players preparing for the next level of play. The majority of the league teams are in the younger age divisions, which continues to “feed the bottom” of the DVGSA program and that is critical for long term sustainability.

| The league offers recreational league play, as well as travel tournament team play made up of the leagues elite 10u, 12u and 14u players. These DVGSA league based tournament teams are named the “Dynomite”, the traditional team name that was grandfathered in during the early years of DVGSA. The Dynomite teams have become a recognized group of teams that have fun, work and play hard and most importantly never give up. The tournament level of play begins towards the end of the league season and is has an added expense and is more competitive in nature than league play. This opportunity takes teams throughout Northern Nevada to compete with neighboring community travel teams. The circuit stops in Fernley as well consuming every youth baseball/softball field in Fernley, bringing in thousands of tourists to the community. Local businesses have benefited greatly every year from our annual tournament. Additionally the circuit has taken teams to Carson City, Reno, Gardnerville, Yerington, Winnemucca, Susanville (Ca) and Gardnerville. Teams work to earn a birth to the “Western National” tournaments, where teams gather to do battle for top recognition.
As with all volunteer youth sports programs, a collective group of dedicated individuals is critical to our success. Parents and people of the community are encouraged to help in anyway that they can. Every hour of help really counts and can help contribute to providing a great experience to the youth of our community. Opportunities always exist in areas that include league board positions, coaching, team moms, paid umpires, concession stands, field work, scheduling, equipment, etc. To learn more about what you can do to help, visit www.DVGSA.com and contact any of the league board members for additional information.
