January 2008 Volunteer of the Month
Congratulations to Virgil Kay Johnson on being chosen as the January volunteer of the month. Kay moved to Fernley in 1955 and has lived here for 52 years. Previously he lived in Reno and Fallon. Kay has been a volunteer here at the center for about 4(four) years and has worked as a volunteer for Boy Scouts for about 50 years! He mainly helps out in our Thrift Store, but Kay will help wherever needed.
Kay states he became a volunteer to add some pizzazz to his life. Kay lives with his wife Marilyn. They have 4 daughters, 2 step daughters, 2 step sons, 27 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Before retiring Kay worked as a fisheries biologist for the Nevada Dept. of Wildlife. Kay states, “you should become a volunteer because you have the opportunity to be an influence on the lives of other people, and you get to meet new people. At the Fernley Senior Center Thrift Store I have had the opportunity of working with and meeting several very special people.”
