In many advise columns in the newspaper such as Dear Abby people ask how they can meet new people and make friends. The usual answer is to volunteer for different jobs in your community and you will usually meet like-minded people.
When my husband and I moved to Fernley in the early 80’s we didn’t have to be told about volunteering. We had moved here from a small community and if we and others didn’t volunteer many events would not have happened.
So what did we do in our new community? He was a retried grocer so he offered a helping hand to his friend and fellow grocer Jack Brody at his Country Store. Then a young couple started a “Bait and Bottle” store for sportsmen. He helped them understand the grocery part of their business. In doing so he met many fishermen and hunters.
I had been a swimming teacher for about thirty years and had worked as a life guard at several swimming pools. I found out the local AARP group of Seniors had a summer swim program which took place at the S Bar S Ranch outside of Wadsworth. I helped with their program and helped teach hundred of children to swim. Later I was part of the group which got our local pool built.
I had also been the school librarian in our former community so it was a natural for me to offer to help at our local library and help organize the Friends of the Fernley Library Organization.
The list goes on and on, we made many friends and acquaintances. Many people think we are some of the “old timers”. In many ways Fernley is our home town. There is always a need for volunteers.
