Broadway at Steinway. The Reno Pops Orchestra hosts an entertaining evening of Food, Wine Tasting, Live Music, and Broadway show tunes at their Broadway at Steinway fundraiser on March 27, 2010. This special event helps the Reno Pops Orchestra present free concerts to the community and actively promote music education to families and children throughout the year. A portion of the proceeds will be contributed to The Reno Pops Hillary Case Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The Pops will showcase selections from Westside Story and other favorite Broadway musicals with guest soloists and audience participation. Tickets are $60 per person or $440 for a table of eight and include wine tasting poured by Vino100, dinner catered by Ruby River Steakhouse but served to you individually by orchestra members, a live auction emceed by Ron Smith, formerly of KNPB, silent auction items, live music by Kenn Pettiford in the showroom, and entertainment by the Orchestra. [May 1] A.V.A. Ballet Theatre's Swan Lake
The spring gala season for the A.V.A. Ballet Theatre opens with the classic Swan Lake on May 1st and 2nd at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. The A.V.A. Ballet Theatre Orchestra led by conductor Michael Borowitz will perform the haunting score to this wonderful ballet. Re-staged and re-choreographed by Alexander Van Alstyne, Swan Lake is the story of Odette who was turned into a swan by the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart. She tells the handsome Prince Siegfried that the only way the spell can be broken is if a man, pure in heart, pledges his love to her. Von Rothbart tries to keep the two apart but in the end they ascend to the heavens above Swan Lake.
Professional dancers from throughout the west coast will star in the lead rolls with Kate Crews from Ballet West as Odette. The large cast includes many talented dancers from four different ballet studios in the Reno area. The Saturday May 1st performance will be held at 8pm and the Sunday May 2nd performance will be at 2pm. Ticket prices for adults are from $25 to $40. Ticket prices for children 12 and under and seniors 65 and older are from $15 to $35. For tickets call the Pioneer Center at 775-686-6600 or on-line at pioneercenter.com. [Mar 20] Texas Hold 'Em Tournament Benefit for Relay for Life
The Fernley Rotary Club is hosting a Texas Hold 'Em Tournament to benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
The poker tournament will be held on March 20, 3 p.m. at the Fernley Community Center. Buy-in is $30, with an optional $5 add-on. Players will have a single re-buy option within the first hour. Prizes are to be awarded to the top five places. Food and beverage is offered by Pioneer Crossing Casino. This tournament is open to the public; however, space is limited so pre-registration is strongly encouraged by calling or texting Rotarian Dan Glass at 835-9255. |

The Fernley Pool will be offering Lifeguard training classes in March. If you are at least 15 ½ or older and want to prepare for a challenging job, this is the best place to start. Lifeguarding allows you to work as part of a team to help people safely enjoy the water. You could save a life! Learning is fun and easy. In this class you’ll get hands-on practice and learn key skills. This course encompasses the new American Red Cross/American Heart Association guidelines. Prequalification testing will be held on Thursday, March 4th at 7:00PM. You must be able to swim 500 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order: front crawl using rhythmic breathing (200 yards), breaststroke (100 yards), either front crawl using rhythmic breathing or breaststroke (200 yards). You must also swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 10-12 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with that object.
Class sessions will be held on Friday evenings and Saturdays & Sundays for two consecutive weekends. Class sessions are: Friday March 5th, Saturday March 6th, Sunday March 7th; following on Friday March 12th, Saturday March 13th & finishing on Sunday March 14th. Friday classes are from 7:00PM to 9:00PM Saturday & Sunday classes are from 8:00AM to 4:00PM with a one hour lunch break. You must attend all classes. The course requires a minimum enrollment of six students for classes to be held. There is no charge for the testing. The course fee is $150.00 payable upon registration on or before the first class. You may pay by cash or check with proper photo ID. Sorry, we cannot accept debit or credit cards. There is no upper age limit to take the class. The new lifeguard training manual and a CPR pocket mask are included. Lifeguards are nationally certified upon successful completion of the course. Be a lifeguard, save a life!
