The Youth City Council with guidance from Leslieann Hayden, supported by the City of Fernley and the Fernley City Council is one our best efforts! These kids are amazing. Last Thursday evening the Youth City Council sponsored a “Women’s Leadership Symposium” that was so professionally put together and presented you would have thought women twice their age, education level and experience had been the organizers. As members of our community you should be very proud of these young people, they are truly our future leaders.
Because of budget cutbacks the Youth City Council has to fund all of this year’s events with money provided through grants, donations from local business and volunteers. The Council Chambers looked like a beautiful ballroom with round tables decorated in pink with gorgeous center pieces. At each table setting was a gift for those in attendance and a lovely buffet was served along the side wall. All of this was accomplished by the generosity of Dennis Banks Construction, Scolari’s Food and Drug, Starbuck’s, Mirage, Electric Sun Radiance Salon, Anytime Fitness, Fabu Nails, Avon Dee Cassell, Mary Kay Melanie Freeman, Susan B. Komen Foundation, All Tune and Lube, Steve’s Homemade Ice Cream, Louie’s China Bistro, University of Phoenix, David Stix, Jr., and Wal-Mart who provided $5,000 in grant funds earlier this year to our Youth City Council. And they still have money to fund future YCC events.
Many women from throughout our community turned out for the Symposium. The program established by the girls of the YCC included presentations from local women in leadership positions and how they attained their success, a very inspirational message from Juliana Erdesz our current Miss Nevada who will be competing in the upcoming Miss America pageant and an explanation of the Miss Nevada Scholarship Organization/Miss Nevada State Pageant by Dali Weiderhoft who is Co-director of the organization. At the conclusion of the program the YCC girls gave a power point presentation on mentoring. Our Youth City Council is asking for volunteers to participate in this mentoring program.
